3 Reader Q &A: Heather’s Question…Her Mom’s Kitchen

>> Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Of course, Heather’s email not only made my day but sent my home-loving noggin spinning with ideas. Let’s revisit Heather’s email…

So, you've heard this before but, I LOVE YOUR BLOG!! I shared it with my mom and she loves your style too! She's slowly remodeling some of her house and is not a do-it-yourselfer or home interior guru but, when told what to buy, she knows her way around the local hardware store.

Her question to me was whether all of the new ceiling fans had to match since it's such an open floor plan? Also, below are her comments/questions about hardware on her painted white kitchen cabinets…

Where the light is hanging by the kitchen window, I'm thinking about 4-5 recessed lights across the counter where the kitchen window is. I'm not sure if those are still popular. Also, do rustic knobs and drawer pulls look good on white cabinets, or if brushed nickel is better? I tend to like a softer, simple look of brushed nickel and clean lines, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on stuff going out of style!

Holy visqueen! You’ve been busy my dear, and I love every second of it.

Basically we can break Heather & her mom’s questions into three parts…

1. If there is more than one ceiling fan in the same room, do they have to match?

The obsessive side of my personality says absolutely, 100% yes. My vote is that if you have two light fixtures in the same room or are even visible from the same room, the finish at least needs to match. Brushed nickel light fixture in the breakfast nook right off of the kitchen? Stick to brushed nickel fixtures in the kitchen as well. Of course, every rule is meant to be broken and designers are pros at mixing and matching finishes, but for the DIY novice, sticking to a similar finish is a safe bet.

2. Are recessed lights still popular?

Yes! And I am especially fond of recessed lighting in kitchens. Recessed lighting can often be controlled by separate light switches from the main lighting fixtures in a space, which definitely comes in handy when a bit more light is needed to assist in reading fine print cookbooks and food labels.

3. Rustic or brushed nickel hardware on white cabinets?

Both!—That was the easy answer, right? But true! The truth is, there are so many great options for cabinet hardware out there that it’s hard to go wrong and really depends on the style of the rest of your kitchen. Opting for an warm, earthy paint color? I love a more rustic approach, but if your aiming for cool hues in blues and greens, brushed nickel hardware offers a more sleek feel.

Below are a few of my personal favorites in both finishes…

I hope this helps you ladies, and be sure to send the after shots my way. No excuses!

Inspired 100% by the fabric, I fell so in love with this hot ticket during our time together that I may just have to bid on it myself. I’m assuming that is allowed…

2 Fall Favorites

Maybe the not-so-distant memories of the unbearably hot summer we Arkansans faced makes fall seem especially lovely, but the 55 degree weather that greeted me as I rolled out of my front door this morning was a welcomed treat.

Let’s pay homage to a few of my all time fall favorites and see if we can tempt the cool temperatures to hang around a bit longer…

image   image
Martha Stewart   Aunt Sadie’s Candles
Hail the queen of all things crafty! Martha’s holiday tips & tricks are always an inspiration.   A year round favorite, but the Autumn & Christmas scents are what my dreams are made of.

Pottery Barn   The Pioneer Woman Cooks
…because PB is on all of my “favorite” lists: summer, Christmas, alternating Fridays…   We all know I’m no master chef, but Ree’s recipes are the definition of fall comfort food.

…one last note on the Pioneer Woman. Ree and I are basically best friends, so while I’m not a whiz in the kitchen, I’d be happy to give my gal pal a call to answer all of your culinary concerns. No big deal.

2 Business in Front

>> Thursday, September 23, 2010

To my wonderful LTHL friends,

Board_Cara It’s 3:45 pm and no Thursday blog post? I am positively sure you are deeply concerned for my well being and were inches from slapping my mug shot on the back of a milk carton…but mainly ticked that you had one less blog post to distract you from what you should actually be doing at work. My apologies.

But no worries, my friends! I am alive and well and ready to head back to Little Rock where I have a plethora of home projects waiting to distract you from all work responsibilities. Until then, sleep easy knowing that I had a great time with coworkers in Colorado, learned more than my home-loving brain can handle, sliced through a board stemming from what I am confident was the sturdiest tree west of the Mississippi with my bare hand AND…of highest importance…witnessed  the most fantastic female mullet to walk the face of this earth.

2 Before & After: Jen’s Laundry Room

>> Wednesday, September 22, 2010

While I’m spending a little time (and working hard, thank you very much) in Colorado, take a little time to admire Jen over at Tatertots & Jello’s fabulously revamped laundry room.

Although already a cute space before, it was looking a tad vanilla.

image

After a little elbow grease, Jen’s inspiring new laundry room will rock those dirty socks right off your feet and into the washing machine.

Amazing, right?

No need to feel guilty if you happen to jealously utter a few hateful words under your breath. I don’t…
