5 Back in Black

Remember this guy? A few weeks ago we stumbled upon this old dresser at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. It needed a great deal of TLC, but we recognized the potential in this fellow. So for $25, we lugged him home and began the transformation from old and dirty to handsome and sturdy.

Ah. The before picture. Not only did this piece need a fresh coat of paint, but a can of Lysol as well...

Once cleaned up, we removed the hardware, drawers and cabinet doors. We decided to feed the drawers to the trash truck and leave the top spaces as three open shelves for the cable box, DVD player, etc...

Then, it was time to sand and prime. An important step, since the new paint would not have stuck to the preexisting varnish...

Once the primer was dry, three coats of black paint, one coat of polyurethane and new hardware gave this guy a fresh look. Here is our new TV console table hard at work. Is it just me, or does this guy stand a bit taller now that he has a fancy new coat?...

Budget Breakdown:

Dresser . . . . . . . . . . . . . $25
Paint & Supplies . . . . . . .$15
Hardware . . . . . . . . . . . . $18
Total . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $48

Another success! We are so pleased with the result and cannot wait to get started on another project. We already have one in the works, and boy, is it a doosie. Stay tuned!

We got an old dresser off Craigslist for our TV space and I finally feel like I can transform it!
That looks like a completely different piece, amazing job!

Totally LOVE This one. I want to do something similar to this for both my bedroom and family room. Now just to scrounge the suitable well-loved and offcast pieces. :)

Love your blog Cara.

Have you considered buying TINTED primer? You can get it tinted to whatever color you choose.
