I’m taking a rest-of-the-week blog break, not because I don’t love you dearly, but home sales are up in this neck of the woods and work is piling up all around me…let’s not even discuss my Christmas shopping list without a single name scratched off.

I have a bit of sad news for my LTHL friends. My sweet little guy Ralph headed to puppy heaven last week. With his goofy ears and turned out feet, he never failed to bring a smile to my face.

With one fewer family member hanging around this construction site of mine, leave it to Gran to have just the words to cheer me up.
Cara: Thanks, Gran. I will miss him. He was such a great puppy.
Gran: Well, when my dog Sadie died (from eating too much butter over the course of her six year life, mind you) I decided to make a scrapbook and write down the funny things that Sadie used to do.
Cara: That is a great idea…
Gran: Yes, it was, but then again, I have lots of great ideas.
Cara: Well, what did you write about?
Gran: One thing that Sadie used to do was bark every time someone passed gas. She would announce it to the whoooooole room. Yes, she did….She was a good dog.
Thanks for the cheering up, Gran. You always know just what to say.

I know that I’m not alone in my never-ending love affair with hardwood floors. Honey stained strips, espresso planks—all are fabulous in my book. What’s not so fabulous is the struggle to keep them clean. In this neck of the woods, with four little ones parading around the house, tumbleweeds lurk around every corner.

PS—I know I’ve overloaded you with updates from the Wilkerson Zoo in the past few weeks, but in no way, shape or form do I apologize for being a fabulous pet parent who exploits her canine/feline children for the promotion of her small potatoes blog.

Ignore the obvious need of a major haircut, this picture was a serious accomplishment since June’s usual position involves her face glued to the window scouting for squirrels…
So, what is she? Our best guess is this combo…
I know the schnauzer in that picture looks a little scary, but our June is a sweet girl, I promise.

The original schnauzer was bred as a rat catcher, yard dog and guard dog. (Rat catcher? That explains all of the squirrel business.)
Jack Russell Terriers are not recommended for the condominium or apartment dweller unless the owner is ready to take on the daunting task of providing the dog with the necessary amount of exercise and stimulation (Boy, is that the truth! Click here to check out June’s exercise routine in action)

…usually the first question that comes out of everyone’s mouth upon meeting our little canine companions—often accompanied by a tilt of the head and nervous giggle.
No worries, my friends. We know our babies weren’t meant to prance their paws at fancy dog shows, but let’s take a moment to explore what they really are bred to do…
Today we’ll focus on subject #1… 
Our incredibly sophisticated research (aka Google & cornering our vet who is clearly antisocial and uncomfortable in the same room with mammals other than the four legged kind) reveals that Ralph is—drum roll please…
Wikipedia had tons of info to share on these furry breeds, but basically this combo produces a fine specimen with the following characteristics…
Welsh folklore says the Corgi is the preferred mount of fairy warriors. (Great. Not only do I have to worry about fleas hitching a ride on Ralph’s back, but fairies as well?)
Because the Parson was bred to hunt, it can be difficult for them to live with some pets such as small rodents. (Small rodents? No worries there.)
That’s Ralph in a nutshell. We’ve gotta scoot now. All this Ralph talk is enough to wear a little guy out…

Yesterday was such a lovely day that we decided to let Tooty taste a little freedom with a trip to the backyard. Boy was she in heaven, until Ralph tried to get a little too friendly. Be sure and check out the saucy pose Tooty throws out there at the end…
